Achieving Balance: The Impact of a 50% Women Team on Innovation and Success

In this article, Jun Li, VP of Engineering at Renesas speaks about the benefits of building a gender diverse engineering team at Renesas’ Design Centre in Beijing. Read on to learn more.

Q: What can you tell us about the gender diversity in the Renesas Beijing Design Center in China? What do the teams do and what proportion of the teams are women? 

We have 48.3% female employees at Renesas Beijing Design Center in China.  Within our design teams in Beijing and Suzhou, approximately 46.7% (330) of the total workforce are women and perform engineering roles in our Embedded Processing, High-Performance Computing, Power, Software & Digitalization, and Central Engineering departments, focusing on research and development related to chip design, software and solutions.

 

Q: How does having a team with a nearly equal ratio of male and female members contribute to the dynamism and overall performance of the company? 

Women bring unique viewpoints and experiences that enrich team discussions and decision-making. This diversity of thought is invaluable in helping to identify innovative solutions and approaches to problems.

Our female employees are proven to be excellent collaborators, leading to the achievement of individual and team goals. In terms of technical innovation, they have collectively, and expertly, contributed to 6 intellectual property applications over the last several years. Their excellent attention to detail has also reduced the number of bugs found in chip designs.

Studies show that women often excel in communication and collaboration. It is clear that this helps foster a more cooperative and cohesive team environment and more effective problem-solving.

 

Q: How do you create an environment that is supportive and inclusive regardless of gender for all team members? 

Having a diverse interview panel helps to create a more comfortable and inclusive environment for candidates.  We carefully consider the gender balance in the recruitment process to reduce the risk of bias and are also keen to develop career plans for all employees.

Our female managers play a crucial role in recruiting and nurturing new talents and it is important to us to ensure that they continue to help maintain an inclusive working environment where all our employees have a sense of belonging.
